Imagine if all these hard-working people were deported… They’re not violent criminals; they are hard-working people who wash dishes and buss tables in virtually all of our restaurants, clean and maintain our hotels, dig the ditches on construction sites, roof houses, landscape our yards, and labor under dusty, hot conditions picking the produce we eat. I can’t help but wonder how many of these businesses would have to close if these dedicated workers were all taken away.

Great post, Doug. Thorough as always. And love the bit about coffee helping women age better, like a satyr play to alleviate pain in the midst of tragedy

Why, we’re forced to wonder, are ICE agents terrorizing neighborhood restaurants instead of hunting down known visa violators, like the Egyptian national who threw Molotov cocktails at Jews gathering to support the release of the remaining hostages held by Hamas. The administration loves to say that the undocumented are criminals, but that simplistic fig leaf fails to cover the fact that the Buona Forchetta dishwashers (who, not incidentally, are here legally) are not terrorists hurling Molotov cocktails.
